Description:
This orange and yellow blown mold slag glass swung vase is 1960s vintage. Standing 20 1/2 inches tall with a 3 7/8-inch wide footed base, it begins as white and clear glass, then yellow, streaked with green, before it becomes more and more orange. As the base becomes a 5-inch bowl and then the trunk of the vase, the orange is blended with a cream color, giving it somewhat of an appearance of orange sherbet by the top.
This change in color is in parallel with the unfolding of the pattern which also begins at the base. Circles become bigger circles; there is a demarcation of a wreath of diamonds, then ovals, then again, diamonds, which, stretched, complete the look of the "pulled" or stretched glass which continues to the 2 inch, ragged oval opening at the top.
This is the natural result of creating swung glass. Swung glass vases begin as small glasses with a design set into the lower part. As the glass is heated, the maker slings it by hand from the end of a long metal rod to obtain the desired result. Because of this approach, all pieces are unique within the generally same product line and design.
I believe this vase to be manufactured by one of the West Virginia glassmakers such as Fenton or Viking. It is in excellent condition!
