Description:
I acquired this from the original owner, who advised me she'd purchased it in 1965 in NYC (for $20) at what was then termed the Museum of American Folk Art--as is emblazoned on the original box the brooch still rests in. The year seems exactly right as, in 1966, that institution's name was changed to the American Folk Art Museum.
This ceramic brooch was created with a modern approach and hand painted in different shades of blue, with gold accents. Measurements are a healthy 4" long x 2 1/16" at widest point. Only "flaw" I find is a bit of roughness about the edges on the right-hand side, which are not really visible when brooch is worn, of course. My impression would be that this was a result of the hand-creation of the piece. Otherwise in excellent vintage condition after more than 40 years, and a real underwater stunner!
