In 1958 at the height of Marilyn's beauty and Avedon's amazing ability the two spent a few days recreating some of the glorious glamour queens of years gone by with magnificent results. Marilyn posed as Lillian Russel, Theda Bara, Clara bow, Jean Harlow and Marlena Dietrich- and created some of the most iconic images of herself ever seen. Avedon;s eye for drama detail, beauty and humor all shine through in each portrait. Here splashed languorously across two pages is Marilyn in a primal element glaring moodily at the camera attired in gilded snake headress and brassiere, in some lush harem done in smoldering spicy shades of orange, cinnamon, scarlet and sapphire blue leaning one bare arms against the head of a tiger skin rug- compelling, bewitching and utterly captivating as the screens first vamp- Theda Bara. Great use of color, spectacle, texture with an almost unrecognizable Marilyn still gorgeous as a brunette! This is taken from the original source the 1958 issue of Life Magazine that features a seven pages spread with all the Avedon beauty through the ages imagery.
