Description:
The MG TF 1500, the last of the T-series, and made only in 1955, is the most-prized of the post-war MGs. It retains hints of the classic lines of its forebears, while incorporating a larger, 1500 cc engine, and other advances to enhance driving comfort. Following WWII, the first British sports car to capture American hearts was the MG TC. This popularity would prompt MG to build a model designed specifically for the US; instantly a success, the MG TD appeared in 1949 with an improved ride, better handling and most importantly, left hand drive. It was not long, however, before MG fans started looking forward to a far more powerful MG, something capable of keeping up with the new Triumph TR2 or Austin-Healey 100. What they got was the TF, unveiled in late 1953. MG purists severely criticized the TF for its faired-in headlamps, new bonnet design, sloping hood line and raked radiator, which they felt compromised the essence of MG. Others, who did not share the same enthusiasm for the TC and TD welcomed the compromise the TF offered . When introduced, the MG TF was powered by the same XPAG 1,250 cc engine that had driven the TD and the TC . A mere 3hp increase brought little improvement in performance, although 0-60mph times improved by nearly five seconds to 18.9 (which at the time was still quite slow). Salvation would come within a year, in the form of an additional 250 cubic centimeters of engine displacement. This car has had only 4 owners,. The original owner purchased it new in 1955, sold it in 1984 to a noted MG expert in Texas, who stored it in a dry shop for over 20 years. Upon his death, the third owner purchased the car from the estate, and I bought it in 2008. I have the original bill of sale, and other documentation. This MG is a “survivor,” meaning that it has never undergone a complete restoration. However, in the past several years, about $10,000 has been spent to put the car into top-notch mechanical shape. Work included, but was not limited to, new brakes, hoses, fuel pump, gas tank, tires, etc. Receipts are included for most of this work. Top and side curtains are sound, but not new. Tonneau cover is new. Interior is excellent, and the body sports mostly original paint, along with a few abrasions and contusions that are minor enough to have gone unrepaired. The engine and drive line are strong, with the engine maintaining good oil pressure and normal operating temperature, even here in sunny Florida. Instruments and lights all work. Odometer mileage is 78,483 in October of 2009, and I have no reason to believe that that is not accurate. This is a great-driving car, and one need not worry about driving it for pure pleasure, which is not possible with a fully-restored show car. I drive it, on nice days, and each time I do, it peels about 40 years off my age ! More photos and information are readily available.
