Description:
The German art of Scherenschnitte or scissor cutting was a form of poor man's art during the early years of the 20th century, as post World War I oil paints and art supplies were exeptionally scare and available only to the rich.
This lovely piece was likely no exception with its strong art deco style. Signed by Elfe Bosch (as closely as I can make out the signature) and dated 1923, can't you imagine it being lovingly made as a valentine by a poor student or young wife with paper and scissors as her only means to acknowledge Valentine's Day. Represented as a stylized heart with cupids, it is mounted on an unusual but appropriate red background, which has faded a bit over the 84 years since it was made. It is framed in a lovely detailed brass frame with convex glass, typical of this period as well. Since most scissor cuts were framed in black lacquer, there is a possibilty this is a replacement frame from the 50's or 60's which utilized the original convex glass. Perhaps another young lover "updating" the look a generation later?
