Description: 1919 Exquisite Vintage Jazz Age Ad- Exotic Ancient Egyptian Beauty Extols the Virtues of Palmolive Soap- Gorgeous Dean Cornwell Camel Caravan by Moonlight Artwork. Absolutely Dazzling Original Vintage Jazz Age Ad taken from the pages of Spring, 1919 issue of Ladies Home Journal Magazine. The years just preceding the Art Deco period, immediately following World War One are often considered the true Jazz Age when styles were transforming and American commercial art reaches it's high-water mark of true excellence. Color printing, the use of exotic, alluring sometimes fantasy-related imagery and the employment of some of the greatest artists of the century- (such as Coles Phillips, J.C. & F.X. Leyendecker, Maxfield Parrish, Neysa McMein, Fred .L. Packer,Jessie Wilcox Smith), all lead to a mini- Renaissance outpouring of glorious commercial artistic achievement. Magazines such as the Ladies Home Journal and companies such as Palmolive Soap were able to offer the public the sumptuous, lavishly elegant fantasies of impressively talented artists such as young Dean Cornwell's work seen here. Cornwell, like the Leyendeckers and Norman Rockwell came to great prominence largely through the popularity of his commercially created campaign work for high-profile clients such as Palmolive. His eye for detail, strong sense of fantasy and color and amazing ability to create majestic splendor with lovely historical subtext gained him great popularity during the latter days of World War One. This stunning ad is seen to best advantage in the larger format of the magazines during this time and gives the viewer a vibrantly memorable scene of a desert princess pausing to purchase oils and rare perfumes known to protect beauty by the clever inhabitants of Africa and Asia. Note the headdress and earrings of the lovely woman in white and gold and her equally beautifully attired dark-skinned cosmetic seller. Artist Dean Cornwell adored creating images of ancient splendor and would become successful as a painter who often crafted images of tremendous beauty and strength with primarily religious and biblical subject matter. He brings some of the reverence towards his more formal subject matter to this unique yet commercial image. Note that Palmolive credits the work with the simple words Painted Exclusively for the Palmolive Company by Dean Cornwell at the bottom of the image. An absolutely wonderful bit of superb artistic merit- ad measures 11x 17, condition is bright and excellent overall- some minor wear to the edges- will be gorgeous on display matted and framed with any decor.
