Description: 1919 Alluring Vintage Jazz Age Ad- Fabulous Blonde Flapper Bathing Beauty Pin-Up prefers Williams' Talc Powder for Seaside Refreshment Cole Phillips Artwork. Delicious and Delightful Original Vintage Jazz Age ad is taken from the back pages of a Summer, 1919 issue of Delineator Magazine. Absolutely Dazzling full-paged 12 x 17 pin-up bathing beauty done by artist Coles Phillips is the very definition of the merging flapper- dashing, daring sophisticated and smart. Coles Phillips uses a bright palette and cleverly references Venus and Mack Sennett with his dreamy looking blonde bathing beauty- sleek modern and lovely as she emerges from her seaside frolic- to have an attendant maid deftly apply Williams' Talc Powder to her beautifully exposed shoulders. Note the one-piece bathing suit with it's athletic scoop neck which ends above the knee is still primarily black and worn with stockings and shoes. Phillips mirrors the pretty pin-up with an equally lovely uniformed maid a subtle reminder that the product is aimed at not merely a modern reader but also a socially significant one. Phillips uses pale lavender and light yellow in the background to suggest an early sunlit dip at the beach- note the supple movement of the robe and the satiny sheen of the dark pink and kingfisher blue of the charming kimono the flapper will shortly be draping herself in! Tal Powder was packaged wonderfully to lure prospective buyers- and seen as a delicate way to maks the perspiration brought on by strenuous play during the warm summer days. Willaims used some of the best pin-up artists of the day to help define their look and aims- this is one of the best Coles Phillips images of the time. Ad measures 12 x 17- condition is good minus only- some browning at the edges and a bit of wear and scuffing- none of which mar the elegance and charm of the image. Note that the bathing suit seen here was already acceptable beach wear by summer 1919 yet had caused a scandal less than a decacde earlier when worn by swimming sensation Anette Kellerman. Will be a gorgeous addition to any collection! Measures 11 x 14- will be stunning on display with any decor!
