Description: 1917 Glorious Vintage Jazz Age Ad- Auburn-Tressed Pin-Up Beauty Relies on Watkins Mulsified Coconut Oil Shampoo for Radiant Color Coles Phillips Artwork. Absolutely Magnificent Original Rare Vintage Jazz Age Ad taken from the pages of an April, 1917 issue of Ladies Home Journal Magazine. Artist Coles Phillips was arguably among the finest and most influential creators of advertising illustration of his generation- a generation which included the talents of J.C. and F.X. Leyendecker, Maxfield Parrish, Neysa McMein, Helen Dryden, Gene Pressler and Fred L. Packer. Considerably gifted and forward-thinking he assisted in his own way in divining and creating a new, modern confident and alluring woman, one who had no qualms about her looks and adored appearing as glamorous and tastefully racy as possible. Here we see a glorious goddess with long luxuriantly curly auburn hair holding it out in front of a sparkling porcelain sink in a beautiful bathroom with water lilies painted on aqua tiling in the background- clad only in a brief one-pieced bit of lavender and blue lingerie. Note that Phillips uses light and shading to suggest an almost beatific looking maiden- a goddess of beauty culture who relies on Watkins Mulsified Coconut Oil Shampoo to always look her best. Watkins Shampoo was one of the earliest to be touted as perfection for the famous heads of early Broadway and Hollywood actresses, helping to promote them as both beautiful and smart. Wonderful looking ad is even more incredible when viewed in the larger format at 12 x 17- condition is bright and excellent- a fantastic example of some of the finest work of the incredibly talented Coles Phillips. Great example of early Jazz Age pin-up artwork as well- note the slave bracelet on this maidens lightly muscled alabaster arms! Will be incredibly lovely on display with any decor.
