Description:
Here is something quite spectacular - I have never in my career ever seen anything like this one. It is a miniature bow front chest dating from the 18th Century. It is mahogany with highly figured birds eye maple veneers and a lighter color banded inlay. The drawer pulls are made of whale ivory. The back as I hope you can see is moveable. It is on hinges and I believe that this miniature chest did start out as a bank and it looks like it has had a little bit of restoration in those areas like changed hinges. What makes me think it was originally a bank is because the back board is made of the exact same wood as the rest of the chest. It has the same color patina and surface built up. As you can see the chest leans a little bit to the left it looks like there has a been a little bit of a wear to the front foot which does not touch the ground. The surface patina is so rich and mellow and just screams handmade. I like it a lot! The bank back originally had a little key – and I believe that key has been missing for some time. What a unique item this is! I would think that not only a bank collector would love this but also a person who collects fine 18th century furniture (the real thing) or miniature furniture – salesmen samples and toys. As I said I just love this piece and I can’t say enough about it – it is fabulous. It measures 6 ½”h x 5 ½”w x 2 ¼” deep.
