Description:
This hand colored map is a steel plate engraving, dating to 1888 by the legendary American Mapmaker Samuel Augustus Mitchell. It represents a city plan of Cincinnati and Vicinity. Mitchell has given special attention to documenting the city's districts, streets and avenues, parks, cemeteries, hospitals, jails, hotels, state ground fairs, railroads, park lots, post offices, opera houses, high schools, neighboring rivers and other points of interest. This map is dated and copyrighted, 1884. This stunning map is a wax engraving that has been hand-colored in wonderfully intense reds, greens, blues, and yellows. This particular year, 1888, represents one of the latest Mitchell's maps made, and as such is much larger and more detailed than earlier editions. It was originally part of the fantastic Mitchell's World Atlas. This atlas is highly regarded because of its stunningly vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its the size and detail. Indeed, Mitchell's maps are among the most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Mitchell's maps are also especially admired because their rugged detail expresses something of the American Frontier spirit.
