Description:
1886 wood trunk by H. A. Winship of Boston. In those days, the inexpensive trunks were all wood on the outside and the finer trunks, like this, were covered in black or brown canvas and wood. The top of the line trunks were leather and wood. The canvas is mostly intect with small scuffs, mostly in the back panel. One handle has the metal hardware but needs leather, which is a small job. The other handle has most of the leather intact. The canvas on the top of the trunk is great. The metal reinforcements on the corners are very good and quite stylish. The wood strips on the outside are decent with the top great. The lock is the original, Corbin Cabinet Lock Co., New Britain, Conn., Patented October 2, 1883. This does not have a key but a real locksmith can make one. The inside top still has the original label from H. A. Winship of 16 Tremont Street, which happens to be in Boston. The manufacturer's label happens to have a color design, something like a color postcard. The two front metal clasps are fine and work great. The inside wood has no major problems with no cracks, digs, gouges, or big scrathes. The one, as made, left inside hinge is acceptable but has superficial rust that will come clean with naval jelly. Additional photos are available upon request.
