Description: This is a beautiful and old cardboard box for Benson's Plasters. It is covered in a color lithograph (colors are green, gold, and orange) advertising the reputation of the Manufacturing Chemists, Seabury & Johnson of New York: in a ribbon adorning the bottom, it boasts of "Highest awards at Philadelphia, Paris, New York, Melbourne, Matanzas, etc. over all competitors" (what an industrious sales campaign!). In gold, there are numerous copies of small round medellions from exhibitions in many countries, including Cuba, France, and others. It is about the size of a cigar box. It contains a printed sheet of muslin cloth affixed to a plaster (or it could be two). On the face of this cloth is written, "Apply heat if not sufficiently adhesive. Benson's Plaster New York. If the cloth adheres to the face of the plaster, wet it, and it can easily be removed." On the back of this is a pretty advertising paper stamp about 3 inches long by 1.5 inches wide in mint condition. Stuck near the top of the lid inside is a seal which states: "IF THERE IS any cause for complaint of the quality or condition of this box, please advise us, and give the number of the packer. Seabury & Johnson, N.Y. Packer No. . ." and there is a finger pointing downward to some ink-stamped numbers (H44, H35, --41, I22). ALso contained inside is the original booklet with directions inside, and more declarations of the excellent benefits of this remedy, printed on a salmon-colored paper. The directions are wonderful drawings of a moustached man with the plasters stuck on him in various places. The booklet (which is really just one paper, folded and printed like a booklet) is in excellent condition, and notes that the cost was 25 cents in the U.S. & Canada, 1 penny (?) in Great Britain, and 1 mark in Germany. The box, including the linen binding along the inner lid, is intact and in excellent condition. The paper cover shows a little wear along the edges, but really not much. The lid is slightly dirty, but the colors are still bright. Please see the other wonderful antique medical items (such as the quack device, the encyclopedia, & the other plaster box) I have for sale on my site!
