Title: c. 1879 Chinese Atlas of China, Korea & Japan Description: This extraordinary one of a kind item is a early 19th century hand drawn manuscript atlas of China, Korea and Japan. Contains 13 hand drawn and pained maps on rice paper. The exact date of the atlas, as printed on the front cover is Feb 1, 1870 or the 20th day of the 1st month in the 5th years of Reign of Guanxun Emperor. This book is mostly likely a manual copy made by Taoist monks of an earlier Chinese work from Ming Dynasty c. 1410. Given the obvious inaccuracies and cosmological flavor of some of the maps, its intended purpose may have been as an astrological tool for Taoists priests. Central maps better preserved than outer maps which exhibit a yellow stain that is far more pronounced in the photos than in person see photos.
