Description: Frosted cameo proof quality replica of the 1876-CC Twenty Cent Piece. This coin is .999 pure silver layered and measures approximately 40 mm in diameter weighing approximately 26 grams. Individually die-struck proof coin. Coin comes shipped in an airtight hard plastic cover to protect the coin. This coin is a mirror image of the original. A great addition to your collection or as gift History of the 1876-CC TWENTY CENT PIECE: This short lived coin was authorized by the Act of March 3, 1875. Soon after the appearance of the first twenty cent pieces, people complained about the similarity in design and size of the quarter dollar. The eagle on the reverse is very similar to that used on the Trade dollar, while the edging on the coin is plain. In the denomination's first year, more than 1,000,000 pieces were struck at the San Francisco Mint: about 130,000 at the Carson City Mint, and roughly 37,000 at the Philadelphia Mint (not including and additional 2,800 proofs struck in Philadelphia). These numbers dropped sharply in 1876, with most of the Carson City coins (of which this is a copy) were melted at the mint and never released. This fate was likely met by most of the Philadelphia Mint pieces struck in this year as well. In both 1877 and 1878, only proof examples were minted, none of which were struck for circulation. Various factors caused the demise of the twenty cent piece: the publics confusion over the similarity with the quarter dollar (which was well established in U.S. coinage, small change transactions were usually satisfied with Fractional Currency Notes, and the twenty cent piece was essentially a substitute for two dimes. The twenty cent piece was designed by William Barber, one of the greatest U.S. coin designers, and consisted of 90% silver and 10% copper. Only 10,000 proof copies of the 1876-CC coin, of which this is a replica, were ever struck.
