Description:
Looks perfect but isn't. A fabulous object! It is the largest of this design. 14" h x 10.5" across. Adorned with relief molded figures, satyr face handle & 2 portrait medallions of what I believe to be William Shakespeare. The colors were chosen with care & harmonize well, typical of the best Minton Majolica. Impressed MINTON with Date Code for 1871 and shape number 1143. Now to Condition: The glaze is unblemished but there is a crack running around the lower half near the bottom for about 50% of the circumference. It curves up at both ends towards the midway point of the bulbous part. I've had it reinforced and discretely camouflaged here & there. Because it is so far down it is not visible. The jug has to be lifted up & inspected. There also is a repair to 1 of the 2 points that form the spout. Looks perfect from the inside. The work shows on the outside when again the jug is lifted up & inspected. Here is a chance to acquire this rare Minton Tavern Jug for a fraction of the price of a perfect one if one can be found in that condition, in which case it would be $3,000-$4,000. This is the MOTHER OF ALL TAVERN JUGS, please see the photo showing a 1.14L bottle of Seagram's " Crown Royal" Canadian Whisky for size comparison. More photos available on request.
