Description: This hand-colored map is a steel-plate engraving, dating to 1866 by the legendary American mapmaker A. J. Johnson. It represents the United States (USA). This historically important map is one of the first maps to represent the United States in its current political configuration. Only the Dakotas remain undivided. Political boundaries as well as major rivers, territories, and counties are carefully labeled. Also included are major roads, trade routes, and both extant and proposed railroads. Further, all notable mountains, swamps, passes, and even important trading centers are labeled. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense reds, greens, and yellows. This particular year, 1866, represents one of the finest Johnsons maps, as it is exceptionally well-colored and has an especially intricate Celtic border. It was originally part of the fantastic Johnsons New Family Atlas. This atlas is highly regarded because of its stunningly vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, Johnsons maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Johnsons maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders, which, in their rugged detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit. Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peoples attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago!
