Description: In the Italian Renaissance Manner. Height of each is 12.5" and 10.5" at their widest point. Both Minton Majolica Bonbon dishes bear the date code for 1864 and the shape no. 906. They represent "Science and Industry". "Science" is portrayed measuring a sphere with calipers while having 1 foot on a stack of books. A green gear can be seen on the right. "Industry" is seen holding a bee hive and a hammer while leaning on an anvil. These "occupational putti" stand on top of 3 brown & green mottled sea shells with the face of Neptune or Triton watching from above each. I believe a set of at least 4 was produced by Minton since I've seen one other namely " The Arts". The authoritative reference book by Joan Jones "MINTON the first 200 years of design & production" mentions only "The Arts" under no. 906. Obviously as the book went to press in 1993 the existence of others in the set was not known to the author. To see a pair of these is rare indeed. They represent the finest Majolica Figural pieces Minton was capable of creating. The condition of both is superb with only a small older repair to the rim of one shell on each piece. The colors are vibrant, the glaze immaculate. A decorative and useful pair! Would look wonderful loaded up with Petit Four, fancy chocolates & bonbons.....Please click on image for more & larger photos.....To view MORE FINE MAJOLICA I have listed.....just click on the "VIEW THIS DEALER'S OTHER ITEMS" button on the left, then type the word in the search box.
