Description: This hand colored map is a steel plate engraving, dating to 1864 by the legendary American mapmaker A. J. Johnson. It depicts The Heights of Mountains and Lengths of Rivers in The World. The map includes Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and North America. Political boundaries as well as major rivers, territories, and counties are carefully labeled. Also included are mineral deposits, major roads, trade routes, and proposed railroads. All notable mountains, swamps, passes, mines, and even important trading posts are labeled. All major bodies of water, rivers, mountains, islands, and sub regions are labeled. All major cities are also labeled. Most major national and local political distinctions are outlined and defined by vibrant color. NOTE: The line that appears in the center of the map is not a discoloration or flaw. This is the original fold of the atlas and a trick of the light. When framed or matted flat, this line disappears completely. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense reds, greens, and yellows. This particular year, 1864, represents one of the finest and rarest Johnson's maps made as it is of high quality and important date, when Johnson's Mapmaking empire was at its zenith. It was originally part of the fantastic Johnson's New Family Atlas. This atlas is highly regarded because of its stunningly vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its the size and detail. Indeed, Johnson's maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Johnson's maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders, which, in their rugged detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit.
