Description:
Amazing 1862 painstakingly handmade French antique
dome top wood and leather trunk used in the Western US and territories during the California
Goldrush. The wood and leather is in superb but
not perfect condition with minty black rolled
steel supports. The original key and lock work.
The leather side handles are intact but broken and
need replacement but the metal hardware is excellent, intricately detailed. The bottom wood
is grand and has four metal roller wheels, as wheels were introduced to trunks in the 1840's.
There is an intricate many pointed star tupe design carved with love into the outside top wood.
Even the lining is original. The top lid has inside a red wood compartment that may or may not
be considered a secret stash. This red painted
plate has a gold fleus de lis on both sides. The compartment has special hinges to secure it and
to open it up. Attached to the special inside
compartment is an original blue folder or wallet
for special papers. The till or inside main compartment has white straps with black metal
buckles to secure the contents, which could shift
quite a bit when on top of a horse drawn stagecoach. Most stagecoach trunks have a flat
top so they could stack easily. The top of the
line stagecoach trunks, like this specimen, are
not flat but dome topped so they have to ride on
the top, thus insuring less bumps and bruises.
The inside has two gold logos which happen to be the front and back of
an 1862 Napoleon French 20 Franc gold coloured
great facsimile of the real gold coin. With Louis
Vuitton French trunks trading in the $15,000 to
$20,000 range, this fantastic 1862 original French trunk is a great buy. Why pay $10,000 or
$15,000 more for a label? Think about it. You
will be happy with this trunk and it is so nice
that with six trunks currently in stock, I really
do not care if this one sits for a while. This
trunk is a keeper and when I sell it, I will have
