Description: This hand colored map is a steel plate engraving, dating to 1860, by the legendary American Mapmaker Samuel Augustus Mitchell. It represents the state of Maine. Political boundaries as well as major rivers, territories, and counties are carefully labeled. Also included are major roads, trade routes, and proposed railroads. Further, all notable mountains, passes, and even important trading posts are labeled. There is an inset map of Portland Harbor and vicinity. This map is dated and copyrighted, 1860. All major bodies of water, rivers, mountains, islands, and sub regions are labeled. All major cities are also labeled. Most major national and local political distinctions are outlined and defined by vibrant color. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense reds, greens, blues, and yellows. This particular year, 1860, represents one of the finest Mitchell's maps made, as later editions were less vivid and earlier editions less detailed. It was originally part of the fantastic Mitchell's New General Atlas. This atlas is highly regarded because of its stunningly vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its the size and detail. Indeed, Mitchell's maps are among the most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Mitchell's maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders which, in their rugged detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit.
