Description:
1850's American decorated Old Paris porcelain sauce tureen with cover and attached stand. Fig finial and Rococo Revival scrolled handles. This piece was decorated by the New York city firm of Messrs, Haughwout & Dailey. An American porcelain decorating company. This company decorated a White House china dinner & dessert service for President Franklin Pierce in 1853. The Pierce service and this tureen both have distinctive Rococo Revival shield painted on it. Please see pg 76-81 of "Official White House China". To compare the Shields. Condition: Small rim flack on rim of tray. Wear to gold gilt. Height 7" wide 9" 1/2. This kind of ornate Paris porcelain was a big part of 19th century Southern culture and used in the fine rooms of plantation homes and townhouses in the deep South from Mobile Alabama to New Orleans Louisiana and Up to Natchez Mississippi, Where lots of it can still be seen today.
