Description: Title: City of New York Description: This hand colored map of New York City is a copper plate engraving, dating to 1850 by the legendary American Mapmaker S.A. Mitchell, the elder. Depicts the island of Manhattan from 37th street (Kips Bay) south to Battery Park and Brooklyn from Williamsburg to Columbia St. The whole is shown in magnificent detail with many important buildings, ranging from the Brooklyn Navel Yards to important hotels and churches, are depicted and labeled. One of the most visually appealing maps of New York City to emerge from the workshops of a mid 19th century American cartographer. Map is dated and copyrighted, 1850. Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the Elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1847 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait to produce the Mitchells Universal Atlas and the Mitchells General Atlas. In 1860 Mitchell ceded his cartographic empire to his son of the same name. Mitchell Junior continued in his fathers tradition, producing fine American atlases well into the late 1880s. Size: Measures 16 x 13 inches. Condition: Fine or perfect condition. Blank on verso. Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peoples attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago!
