Description: Three-pages, 9 ˝” x 7 ˝”, stampless folded letter, February 18, 1846, in part, by John C. Groome in Elkton, Maryland. Referencing early American law on authenticating last wills and testaments, Groome seeks the help of Josiah W. Smith in Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Smith provides a response in the same document.

Groome, born in Elkton June 8, 1800, died November 30, 1866, was a U.S. Senator served as a Senator during his life. Smith was one of the earliest settlers to Clearfield County, PA, appointed by Gov. McKean, along with two others as the first Clearfield County Commissioners. The first act of Smith and his colleagues was to establish a county seat.

In part, “…I am very anxious to bring the estate of Martha Polk…to a close and will be very much obliged to you if you will take the trouble to ascertain for me the names of the Heirs at Law of Hugh James Jordan (if females & married, the names of their husbands) distinguishing those of age from those under the age of 21 years and stating the places of their residences and whether children, grandchildren or great grandchildren. I wish to move in this business next week and shall favored by an early reply. I have enclosed by this mail to Mr. Iris, the Registrar of Wills of your county, a copy of Hugh Jordan’s will which he sent to me some time ago to have it authenticated in strict conformity with the act of Congress approved on 27 March 1800. Will you take the trouble to see that the authentication is regularly made & the papers returned to me immediately? It will afford me pleasure to serve you when I can.

“Our friend Gen. Cleackey, I suppose you know, is dead. His mind became very much impaired before he died.”

In excellent condition, this early letter carries is a scarce small red Elkton, Md, postmark. PAID 5 manuscript rate mark, and PAID in red oval marking. Small seal tear otherwise excellent condition.
