Description: Museum quality rare Old Paris Porcelain Jacob Petit clock. This clock is a Jacob Petit Masterpiece! The clock has a surmounting of a lavishly decorated turbaned Turkish Sultana. She is reclining on a leopard skin chaise lounge resting one arm on a apple green pillow with raised gold gilt. This rare timepiece is beautifully modeled and painted in polychrome colors. The base on the front and back is festooned in beautifully painted garden blossoms. The clock also has in low relief all over anthemions. medallions Rococo Revival shell and scrolls. Marked in under glazed blue J.P. under the clock. Condition some wear to gold gilt repaired left foot. Height 16" 1/2 by 15". French hard-paste porcelain produced by Jacob Petit (1796-1868) was the greatest exponent of these innovations.Petit worked at the porcelain factory at Sèvres as a painter. With his brother Mardochée he bought a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau in 1830, By 1839 Petit employed about 200 craftsmen and enjoyed great successfinally settling in Paris in 1863. The wares he made were of a purely ornamental character;vases, urns, clocks, figures, inkwells and perfume bottles. Of particular interest are the figural veilleuses, or bedside tea warmers, known as personnages. These brightly painted beauties can be found in the form of exotic characters like Chinese noblemen, sultans and sultanas, and fortune tellers, or more mundane subjects, such as nuns or street vendors. Each one is made in several parts, the top being the teapot and the bottom being hollow with an opening in the back to fit the tiny porcelain oil lamp or godet. . The high-quality porcelain may have been fired in Limoges. The usual colours are pale pink, light green, mauve, black, and gold. The shapes are idiosyncratic interpretations of the 18th-century rocaille style typical of the popular preference for the neo-Rococo during Louis-Philippe's reign (1830–48). Impressed or in blue, the mark for Petit porcelain is JP.
