Description: This lovely rare German porcelain Cabinet cup is of the finest quality painted in the Old Paris porcelain tradition. The cup is beautifully painted in the finest detail with a portrait of Saint John the Baptist holding a cross. Miniature painting don't get better than this. Photo's don't do this cup justice. Around the cup in gold gilt is Neoclassical scrolls & acanthus leaves. The Empire style handle that rises over the rim of the cup has a rosette and terminates in to a face mask. The gold on the up is amazing. On the bottom of the cup in German is "st Johann der Taufer" translates to Saint John the Baptist. Pressed into the bottom of the cup are date number 840 for the year 1840 a "S" and the number 30 a mold number. Condition very good with very little gold wear and a small rim chip that can only be seen from the bottom. Height of cup 4" Height to top of handle 5". Saint John the Baptist (also called John the Baptizer) was a 1st century Jewish preacher and ascetic regarded as a prophet by four religions: Christianity, Islam, Mandaeanism and the Bahá'í Faith. The title of prophet is asserted in the Synoptic Gospels, the Qur'an, the Bahá'í writings and the Book of Mormon. He is commonly referred to as John the Forerunner or Precursor by Christians who consider him the forerunner of Jesus Christ.
