Description:
Very nice American Neoclassical circa 1820's 1830's Thomas Sully type gold leaf oil painting/portrait frame, now with a new mirror. The frame has a very nice Classical molding. The frame could have been made in Baltimore Maryland. A nice American Federal or Empire portrait would look great in it. This type of molding was favored by the great 19th century American English Artist Thomas Sully for his portraits. The frame was crafted of a beveled, angular profile with clean, reserved lines that later took on ornamentation. One of the most important frame designs of the early 19th century America was the Sully frame. The good thing about this frame is it has about 90% of it's original gold leaf. The gold leaf has a very nice mellow color and nice patina where the gold is worn. The is the real thing in the true gold leaf process with a wood frame covered in gesso and than burnished 22k gold leaf. The frames does have a few nicks and some touch ups. Other than that the Condition is very good . Dimensions:Outside frame is 21" 1/2 x 28". Inside frame is 17" 1/2 x 24". The molding is 2"1/2 wide.
