Description:
Title: United States of America Northern Part Description: This brilliant hand colored 1811 map by Edinburgh cartographer John Pinkerton depicts the northern United States as it appeared in the early 19th century. Includes todays New England and Middle Atlantic states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Ohio and Michigan are present only as territories. There are numerous fascinating notes regarding the native American population, such as the Six Nations tribes and the Chippeway (Chippewa) Hunting Country. The unusual Connecticut Reserve in northeastern Ohio is also noted. A spectacular, highly detailed map of this fascinating region with the spectacular almost three dimensional engravings typical of Pinkerton. Practically leaps off the page. One of the best maps of this region to appear in the 19th century. The map comes from the scarce American edition of Pinkertons Modern Atlas, published by Dobson & Co. of Philadelphia in 1818. Publisher:John Pinkerton (1758-1826) was one of the leading masters of the Edinburgh school of cartography which flourished from roughly 1800 to 1830. Pinkerton & his contemporaries (Thomson & Cary) redefined European cartography by abandoning typical 18th century decorative elements such as elaborate title cartouches and fantastical beasts in favor of detail and accuracy. Pinkertons principle work is Pinkertons Modern Atlas published from 1808 though 1815 with a special American reissue by Dobson & Co. in 1818. Today Pinkerton maps are becoming increasingly rare as they are highly admired for their unsurpassed quality, monumental size, vivid hand coloration, and flawless detail. While less well known than the more common works of Thomson and Cary, Pinkertons maps are better produced and of superior workmanship. Size: Measures 21 x 28 inches. Condition: Very good condition. A couple of peculiar spots in Maine, else fine. Wide clean margins. Blank on verso. Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peoples attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past.
