Description: This iron mace epitomizes early Ottoman craftsmanship with its finely crafted detail. The twelve flanges, probably an astrological choice, are delicately shaped with convex striking edges on a stepped recurve. Its form draws heavily on the European as, unlike other Eastern maces, it was made specifically to attack fully armored European soldiers. It is likely that it served at the Battle of Vienna of 1683 and comprised part of the spoils gathered by German and Polish defenders after the Turkish defeat.
