Description: Title: Royaumes, Etats et Pays de la Haute Guinee. Description: This is a beautiful 1780 map of western Africa by the Royal Cartographer for France, Rigobert Bonne. Covers roughly from modern day Guinea south through Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, and Benin then south through Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Depicts the costal region in considerable detail and includes both political and topographical information, however, the interior remains largely unmapped. Publisher: Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonnes work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on costal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Size: Printed area measures 9.5 x 14 inches. Condition: Fine or perfect condition. Wide clean margins. Original platemark visible. Blank on verso. Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peoples attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago!
