Description: Title: Plan de la Ville de Boston et ses Environs. Description: This rare map is a 1763 copperplate engraving of Boston, Massachusetts and vicinity by French Cartographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. This important map is one of the earliest obtainable maps of Boston predating the American Revolution by a full 13 years. Covers from Boston proper to the city of Charlestown and the surrounding areas that would one day become Cambridge and Brookline. Side panel offers important information regarding the citys important buildings, religious centers, and squares. Published for Provosts Histoire General des Voyages. Tooley 105, Phillips 3508 Publisher: Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 1772) is one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is an important transitional cartographer. His long career as hydrographer and ""Ingénieur Hydrographe"" to the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in the completion of hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. Bellins work focuses on accuracy and tends to be less decorative than the earlier 17th and 18th century work of predecessors such as Homann. In addition to numerous works published during his lifetime, many of his maps were published posthumously. He was succeeded in his position by student Rigobert Bonne. Size: Printed area measures 7 x 11 inches. Condition: Very good condition. Light transference, original publishers creases. Else Fine. Wide clean margins. Blank on verso. Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab peoples attention and transport them to a different time and place.
