Description:
T This historically important and visually stunning 1725 Homann map represents what must be one of the oddest parings in cartographic history: the Caspian Sea and Kamchatka. Formally titled Mare Caspium altera Kamtzadaliam seu Terram Jedso. The left hand map, depicting the Caspian Sea follows the 1722 surveys made by Russian explorer and sailor Karl van Verden. The right hand map, depicts Kamchatka, which was then under Russian control, having been taken over by Vladimir Alassov in 1697. Most early 18th century cartography of this region was derived from the word of a shipwrecked Japanese sailor whose account led European mapmakers to believe that Kamchatka stretched nearly to Japan. Hence the depiction of the semi-mythical Jedso and Kuriler Land extensions to the Kamchatka peninsula. Also depicted is a bizarre unnamed and entirely mythical island to the east. WALTER: Japan 120, ""Homann's map has a great deal of influence on the Western cartography of Japan"". Features and elaborate alagorical centerpiece set under the all seeing eye includes a cherub supported title cartouche and literate monkey.Measures 19 x 23 inches. Generally very good condition with minor damp staining to the upper margin and an old but respectable repair to the lower left margin. Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724), his son, Christoph Homann (1703-30) founded 18th century's most important German cartography firm around 1702 in Nurnburg. Six years after his father's 1724 death, Christoph retired from the map business on the condition that all future maps produced by the firm be published under the name of ""Homann Heirs"".
