Description:

The antique icon with a silver oklad (cover) depicting the Saint on horseback holding a falcon in his right hand, the halo engraved in Russian St. Tryphon surrounded by rays. With original velvet backing.

Moscow 1899-1904.

2 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. (6.4 x 5.7cm.)

Provenance: Alexander Sklarevski (1882-1963), Russian concert pianist and composer. Thence by descent.

Saint Tryphon

Of several St. Tryphons venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church, this one is the most popular. Known for his deep faith and the gift of healing, he lived in Asia Minor in the 3rd century and was martyred as a boy by the Romans. His icons always represent a bird symbolizing purity and are rare in the West.
