If you love unique country furnishings and secret compartments, check this out. This early solid walnut cabinet or desk is so cleverly made using pegged construction. The slant lid serves as a writing surface. The top, level surface measures 8” deep – perfect for resting a lamp and books. The lid lifts up to reveal a deep well with one long cubby above 7 small cubbies. There is a board with a hole in it which allows you to grab and remove it. Below the board are 3 finely hand dovetailed drawers with wooden pulls. Now for the really cool part, just below the lid, on the front of the cabinet is a recessed panel. By barely lifting the panel up, the board pulls away to reveal 3 more cleverly hidden drawers. Notice the use of wooden pegs rather than nails on the front and sides. Below are 2 recessed paneled doors having their original lock. Inside is a single, narrow shelf. One door has its original metal key escutcheon. The other door is missing its escutcheon. The cabinet rests on scrolled feet in the front and uniquely shaped delicately scrolled feet in the back. The finish is original and is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and patina.
