Beautiful color engraving named after the Irish poet Samuel Lover's ballad, "The Angel's Whisper," an excerpt of which is printed below the image. John Sartain (1808-1897) was a prominent Philadelphia artist and engraver. Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868) was a German American historical and portrait painter, best known for his painting of Washington crossing the Delaware. Text below image reads as follows: . Bradley & Co. Publishers No. 66 N. Fourth St. Philadelphia R. H. Curran Rochester New York. The Angel's Whisper Painted by Leutze Engraved by John Sartain, Phila. "And while they are keeping bright watch o'er thy sleeping, Oh pray to them softly, my baby, with me. And say thy wouldst rather they'd watch o'er thy father For I know that the angels are whispering with thee. The dawn of the morning saw Dermot returning, And the wife wept with joy her babe's father to see, And closely caressing her child with a blessing Said, I knew that the angels were whispering with thee." Entered according to act of congress in the year 1868 by Bradley & Co. in the clerk's office of the district court of the U.S. for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In very good used condition with minor toning and imperfections to frame as shown. Photographed through frame's glass which explains reflections. Shipped fully insured with tracking number.
