Blacksmith forged of iron in the English manner, with a slot cut in the conical ferrule and the one-piece blade passing through it and secured by hammering the beak wider than the opening. Long narrow concave axe blade with small angled back beak. Diamond- section 15" thrusting spike with turned baluster base; integral side straps. Mounted on original hand-hewn hardwood shaft with original conical iron base shoe. Metal parts with dark brown patina. Length of metal 29 1/4", overall 84 ½". An unusual style, rarely encountered.
