Daniel Sherrin (British, 1868-1940) Clipper Ship Seascape Oil Painting

Unavailable

This oil on canvas depicting a large clipper ship on the high seas is attributed to Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940).  Stretcher measures 24 by 36 inches.  There is some craquelure, consistent with age.  The stretcher resides in a period frame measuring 29.5 by 42.25 by 2 inches. Stretcher measures 24 by 30 inches (61 by 91.4 cm).  Signed "D SHERRIN" in the lower right corner.  This painting likely dates from early in Sherrin's carrier when he was painting along the coast of Suffolk and Norfolk, prior to concentrating on landscape subjects. Canvas was professionally cleaned and relined in January of 2010.

Daniel Sherrin was active from 1895 to 1922. His landscapes, such as Morning near Reigate Heath; Golden Autumn Days; Summer's Day, are sensitive depictions of the changing light and atmosphere, according to the time of day or season.  Sherrin, also a painter of seascapes, was able to render detailed and informed renditions of ships, as in Three-master in High Wind; In Full Sail.  Source:  Benezit Dictionnaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs Et Graveurs.
