Classical Marble Mantle Clock with 4 Bell Westminster Chime

This monumental French mantel clock is attributed to the highly respected clock maker, Achille Brocot and is of exceptional quality.  The marble or slate case has wonderful classical design elements.  There is an inset bronze panel of raised horses and figures in battle.  They appear to be wearing Roman or Greek armor.  On either side of the clock face are decorative cast bronze Corinthian columns.  A second bronze frieze resides below of soldiers, winged figure and a charging chariot with horse.  Notice the delicate gold incising throughout the front of the case.  The gold gilt bezel surrounds a black dial with gold incised numerals and original hands.  Look very closely and you will see 2 hairline cracks on the dial between the Roman numerals one and two.  There is another faint crack over the Roman numeral 11.  The clock retains its original 8-day works which is in excellent condition.  A wonderful and unique feature of this exceptionally made clock is the use of 4 original nesting bells rather than the more typical chime.  The brass bells create the 4 notes needed to play Westminster chimes.  They emit an exceptional sound quality.  They strike every quarter hour at each increasing stanza.  There is a gong which strikes the hour.  The movement is unique in the fact that the “time” spring also drives the hour gong.  The “strike” spring drives the Westminster Chime only.  Overall, the case is in excellent condition.  There is a break in the very bottom panel located at the right side towards the back and a small ½” chip in the marble on the same side against the back edge.  Not only is this a clock that commands attention, but the chiming sounds are a treat as well.
