What a magnificent classical or Empire secretary having gilded trim and bronze mounts. The bold cornice just soars across the top using various shapes and large egg and dart moulding. The entire front of the desk is covered in dramatic flame mahogany graining. Notice the effect of the arched top over the recessed doors. The architectural elements of this secretary are predominant in this piece. The beveled glass doors are trimmed in additional egg and dart mouldings. The doors retain their original working lock and key. Inside are 2 adjustable shelves. Flanked on either side of the glass doors are 2 round pillars wrapped in flame mahogany with solid cast bronze capitals and plinths. The castings are of acanthus leaves and are exquisitely detailed and executed. Check out the uniquely designed desk surface with the rolled front. There are two separate sections that hinge in the middle. The upper section has its original lock and drops down to reveal separate storage cubbies. The lower section rises up to reveal 4 hand small dovetailed drawers and 2 cubbies. The writing surface pulls out and has a burgundy felt covering. This section has its original lock as well. The cabinet rests on 2 round columns having different cast bronze capitals and plinths. Below are 2 recessed paneled doors having egg and dart moulding and their original working lock. Inside is a single shelf. Notice the curved platform that the cabinet rests on. The finish is in excellent condition with only very minor veneer chips on the platform base. The finish is a deep, rich color and has a wonderful patina. What a statement piece in any home or office.
