This extraordinary ormolu and patinated bronze sculpture by the French artist, Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse (1848-1913), depicts two semi-nude females in classical attire, orchestrating a group of cherubs pulling an ornate chariot. It rests upon a heavy carved and decorated pedestal believed to be made from terra cotta. This allegorical scene a playful depiction of Flora, the Roman goddess of Spring, who inspired the Floral Games which included theatrical performances and chariot races in the Roman Circus. This work was recently purchased at local auction and has been professionally cleaned. Gilded surfaces are all original and stunning. The plaster base carries the artist's signature as seen in our image. This is one of the finest group scuptures by Carrier-Belleuse that we have ever seen. The sculptor studied with his father, renowned artist, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887). He also studied with Gustave Boulanger and Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His career began with the Paris Salon of 1870 where he exhibited oils depicting Parisien street scenes. By the late 1880s his attention turned to sculpture and thereafter exhibited busts and classical subjects. He later became artistic director of the Clichy-le-Roi Faience atelier where he received numerous important commissions, including the sculpture to adorn the tomb of President Barrias of Guatemala, and the National Monument of Costa Rica. He was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and was awarded the silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Additional images gladly forwarded upon request. ( hantiques )
