Cast brass guard with Phrygian helmet pommel, decorated with acanthus design and pierced US; sharkskin covered wood grip (worn) with twisted copper wire; reverse scroll-shaped quillon, stamped with E L in an oval (possibly Edward Lewis, Brooklyn, 1851-1865). Imported 30 ½" single-edged French blade with double fullers; etched with military trophies, E. PLURIBUS UNUM, U.S., and American Eagle; marked in script on the spine --- Klingenthal e Culaux & Cie (two deep edge nicks from blade strikes). Original steel scabbard with brass mounts (drag with several dents and a large dent in the steel). Obtained from a descendant of the officer who carried it in the Civil War, named Bostwick, from New York. While records indicate there were 53 Bostwicks from New York who served during the war, only 3 were staff and field officers. Sword appears to have been untouched since the war, retaining dark patina on brass and rust at the ricasso.
