Civil WAR Fancy Victorian 37 PHOTOs ALBUM

Unavailable
The four daughters of the James MOOREHEAD’s of the MOOREHEAD Church received its name of which the doors is about to close is crudely written on one of these photos. Most of the photos have iowa or Ohio printed on the back as to who and where they were taken. The leather bound book has these fabulous fancy brass adornments like old castle doors have. This is a really thick 7" tall book that has 37 photos of family members. Notice the revenue stamps that are on the back of a lot of these. I didn't pull out all the photos so I am sure there will be more stamps on them. They used these to date the photos. As part of the effort by the Congress to fund the Civil War, among a number of taxes levied was an 1864 Act which provided that sellers of photographs affix stamps at the time of sale to "photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes, or any sun pictures", according to the following schedule, exempting photographs too small for the stamp to be affixed: Less than 25 cents: 2 cents stamps (blue/orange). 25 to 50 cents: 3 cents stamps (green). 50 cents to $1: 5 cents stamps (red). Stamps were applied from 1 Aug. 1864 to 1 Aug. 1866. The stamps that you can see are 2 and one cent. I have a lot more photos of this book if you would like to email me to see them. What is fascinating about this album is the fact there are the babies , the young children and mostly the very old grandparents. Very few middle aged folks. The children that have had their photos taken are really cute and some are hand colored a bit. The Victorian furniture behind these is really nice and many of the older more matronly women have a large bell pull next to them. This is sold with all the photos and as is. The binding has come loose and the side metal clasps are missing except one. The front and back of the book is in good condition and identical on both sides.
