CHRISTO (1935- )

Born in Sabrovo, Bulgaria, Javacheff Christo attended the Fine Arts Academy of Sofia and the Vienna Fine Arts Academy. He is considered a conceptual artist because the impact of his work lies in the compelling nature of its idea. In his printed and three-dimensional art, Christo wraps an object, challenging the viewer to accurately remember the concealed object and giving it the notion of rarity because it is inaccessible. A movie was made about one of Christo's most famous projects, Running Fence, which he constructed in Marin County, California. His work has been included in museum exhibitions in the United States, Australia, West Germany, Holland, Israel, and Denmark and is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
