This handsome 2 piece walnut highboy is a wonderful example of Centennial furniture. In the 1870’s, in response to celebrating our 100th anniversary as a nation, furniture companies were designing and selling pieces in the 18th century style. This custom made piece is reminiscent of English furniture. Below the boldly designed cornice are 2 small drawers either side of one deep center drawer above 3 long graduated drawers. The base has a slide out folding shelf/table with 3 small drawers over 2 additional small drawers. Look closely and you will see all the drawers have a narrow band of inlay framing their highly figured walnut fronts. The drawers are all hand dovetailed and have their original locks and cast brass key escutcheons. The shapely base has two boldly turned drop finials and graceful legs with shell carvings on the knees ending in finely carved ball and claw feet. The finish appears original and has a wonderful aged look and patina. All the drawers open and close smoothly.
