Cherry Tall, Grandfather Clock, Bigelow, Kennard & Co.

This commanding, yet beautiful, solid cherry, tall case or grandfather clock was contracted and retailed by Bigelow, Kennard & Co. of Boston, Mass., a highly respected and prominent jewelry store in that area.  The clock measures 8’2” tall to the top of the center finial.  The very top part of the center finial can be removed so that it will fit in an 8’ ceiling home.  The clock bonnet is exquisite, having carved rosettes, delicately turned finials, finely carved shell with acanthus leaves, fully turned fluted columns and fancy cut out sound grills on each side.  Check out the original clock face with the finely chased brass work inside and surrounding the silvered dial.  The clock hands are ornate and the cast brass numerals are raised and applied to the dial.  Notice the small sweep seconds hand dial.  Near the top is another dial allowing the owner to have the chimes play or be silent.  The clock has its original 8 day movement which requires winding once a week.  The works are in excellent running condition.  The clock plays a stanza of the traditional Westminster chime ever quarter hour and strikes out each hour.  The gong and chimes have a wonderful, rich sound that softly resonates in a room.  The clock retains its original brass weights and pendulum.  Notice the beveled glass door and carved fluted quarter columns on either side.  The base panel has a carved and applied laurel wreath and rests on ogee bracket feet.  The case retains its original finish which is in excellent condition having a deep, rich color and patina.  What a grand time piece to grace any home or office.
