Oil on canvas with wood backing, mounted in an old oak frame. Unsigned work of the 17th C Swiss School. This portrait is of a bearded man in red cavalier dress with white trim, collar, and cuffs, wearing a rapier at his side. In the upper left is a coat of arms with the date “ANO DOM./1634." below. In the upper right is “LAVRENT SCHEVB/REGIS CHRISTIAN IV/CENTVRIO/AETATIS SVAE/36". This means that it is a portrait of Laurent Scheub, captain in the service of King Christian IV of Denmark at age 36. Christian IV led a Danish army in Germany during the Thirty Years War which left the Danish government on the verge of bankruptcy. Scheub very possibly saw service during this campaign.
