This wonderfully well detailed Vienna bronze in the manner of Carl Kauba (Vienna, Austria 1865-1922) is called The Carpet Traders and depicts a Moor unfurling a rug from atop his camel with his helper for a prospective buyer. Kauba's intricate bronzes were copied from period prints. They were handcast at the Roman Bronze Works in Austria and imported to the United States between 1895 and 1912. Kauba was the son of an Austrian shoemaker who began his studies at the Academy of the Arts in Vienna with Professor Lauitenberg, carl Wachsman (1848-1905) and Stefan Schwartz. He studied in Paris from 1886-1888. He also worked under the names of T. Curls and Karl Thenn, for more than one foundry, possibly for reasons of copyright. The Carpet Traders is inscribed C. KAUBA on the base and has a dark patina with some polychrome. Dimensions of this large and magnificent piece are 8" h x 6.5" x 3" d.
