This Continental School oil on wooden panel dates from the late nineteenth century, and is signed "XANDRA". Panel measures 14.25" by 22.75" and it resides in a period wodden and gilded gesso frame measuring 22.75" by 31.25" by 2.75". Depicted in this Rococo period scene is a cardinal playing chess with women of the French court. Condition is excellent. There are no visible losses and the surface is relatively clean for its age. The rear carries an old paper inventory label with the handwritten number 700 and partial title in French which has not been deciphered.
