c1890 Walter Tyndale Orientalist Portrait Oil on Canvas

This fabulous oil on canvas by Walter Tyndale (1855-1943), circa 1880s, depicts a Middle Eastern rifleman guarding the entrance to a mosque or other important building. Stretcher measures 16" by 20" and the period giltwood and gesso frame measures 22.25" by 26.25" by 3.25". Tyndale was born in Bruges Belgium, but studied in London and later in Antwerp and Paris. He is known for his portraits and genre works including Orientalist subjects painted while on tour in Syria, Palestine, Morocco, Egypt, and Lebanon. Under the guidance of Claude Hayes and Helen Allingham he later took up watercolor painting. By the turn of the century Tyndale was both a successful and influential illustrator, known for his contributions to travel books, as well as a successful fine artist who held solo exhibitions in London (Dowdeswell Galleries) and on the continent.
