Beautiful Victorian gilt bronze box with an inserted porcelain plaque on the lid, handpainted with a beautiful young lady. Probably French or Austrian and dating to the late 19th century.
Almost 3inches in diameter. Height is a little over 1 3/4inches.
Beautiful foliate raised work on outside of box. Bands of various patterns. Thumbpiece to open box. Original hinge at back in good condition. Inside is lined in black velvet - probably redone more recently as it looks new-ish. Border of lid is rounded and fluted with little cast bows.
It encloses an arched porcelain plaque handpainted with beautiful portrait of a young lady. Ground is lavender in colour - most unusual and offsets the yellow and green dress beautifully.
Finely painted brown locks and facial features. Top quality workmanship.
Very good condition.
