Perfect example of "Broderie Perse", a quilting technique originated in England and later practiced in Colonial America. Broderie Perse is printed chintz appliqued onto a fabric such as cotton or linen and then made into a quilt or bed cover. This square was matted and framed in plexiglass in order that the fine stitching technique could be seen. The color is still brilliant, the perfect stitching wonderful and now it can be appreciated as a form of art. Matted it measures 11" x 11", thought to be early 19th c.
